Kitchen and Bedroom Extension, new Patio, Arundel.

This project designed by Waind Gohil and won under competitive tender involved the complete refurbishment of a grade 2 Listed flint terrace cottage in one of Arundel’s most popular streets. Substantial engineering and building works were undertaken which involved virtually rebuilding the complete property apart from front and rear walls. The difficulty of servicing the site created it’s own problems; all materials were brought through the property and storage space was minimal.

The finished product is a beautiful blend of modern minimalism and eighteenth century character. Light floods in from over head glass panels on the landing and a glass frameless roof to the kitchen supported by a innovative steel ‘gutter beam’. Full story height doors with shadow gap surrounds produce a clean, airy finish whilst elsewhere a Victorian cast iron fire surround remains in one of the bedrooms, an unusual mix which works well and to the satisfaction of both client and architect.
